Lionel Messi Suffers Groin Strain and Ruled out for 3 Weeks after he picked up an injury during the game against Atletico Madrid. He is reported to miss the games against Gijon, Monchengladbach, Celta Vigo and Peru. He might join the training before the game against Deportivo but is expected to appear fully fit against Manchester City.
5th match week in La Liga was horrible for Barcelona fans. The match day ended with Barcelona drawing 1-1 against Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou losing 2 points. Atletico Madrid defense was solid as always with Jan Oblak making some magnificent stops and resisting Barcelona. Ivan Rakitic came to Barcelona’s rescue and scored a header from Iniesta’s cross from the left wing. After the half-time, Messi got injured by a tackle from the Uruguay defender Diego Godin and injured his groin.
Eventually, he was substituted by Arda Turan in the 59th minute after he struggled to carry on. One minute later, the Argentine wonder kid Angel Correa came into the game and scored the equalizer for Atletico Madrid. Barca was caught up on a counter attack and conceded. The Catalans already lost 3 points in the 3rd La Liga game against Alaves where they lost 2-1. Atletico Madrid was also strong enough to deny Barcelona to get away with a victory. A sigh of relief for both of the clubs that their mutual rival Real Madrid also drew their game against Villareal,
Lionel Messi’s injury might not be a sudden incident. It might have it’s origin from Leo’s hamstring injury after the 2nd match week when Barca played Athletic Bilbao. He risked his foot and played against Uruguay and continued to play with Barca. He might not have rested enough to recover fully and a tackle from Godin would have aggravated it. It looks as Luis Enrique might have some difficulties to deal with as Sergio Busquets also has some discomfort. But Barca has a good squad depth this time with Arda and Alcacer seems the possible replacement for Leo.
