Real Federación Española de Fútbol has just announced the Copa Del Rey Semi-final draw. It is official that Celta Vigo will face Deportivo Alaves and FC Barcelona will face Atletico de Madrid. The draws took place today in Madrid and 4 balls were placed in the bowl for each of the qualified team. Celta Vigo was the first one to be fetched out of the bowl. The next came to Deportivo Alaves. Remaining 2 were the obvious, Atletico Madrid and FC Barcelona.
Although all the qualified teams were brilliant during the competition. But RC Celta de Vigo stands out above all. As they were the one who eliminated the Spanish heavyweight Real Madrid. The first fixture of the two ended as a 1-2 loss to Real Madrid on their home ground. In the 2nd leg, Real Madrid could only manage a draw and Celta qualified on the aggregate score 4-3. On the other hand, the 2nd semi-finalist Deportivo Alaves managed a 2-0 win over the Segunda division team AD Alcorcón. Although Alaves isn’t an elite club as well, but they easily managed to win against their opponents. The game between RC Celta Vigo and Deportivo Alaves will be held on Wednesday 1st February at Balaídos stadium which is the home ground of Celta de Vigo. Moreover, the 2nd leg will take place 1 week later on 8th February.
The next two teams Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are long terms rivals. They have been title challengers to each other for quite some time now and have been 2 of the Spain’s top clubs. But an interesting part of the story is that Atletico is a nightmare for the Catalan club in terms of knockout stage fixtures. 2014 and 2016 saw the elimination of FC Barcelona from Champions league by Atletico Madrid. Moreover, the 2 teams came face to face in 2015 Copa Del Rey. Although Barcelona managed a win, but Atletico gave a tough time to the 2 times treble winners. This is a fixture to be kept an eye on.
